After-School Routine for Kids
Total: 55 min
Children come home from school with empty batteries and full heads. Jumping straight into homework rarely works — but neither does unlimited free play that swallows the afternoon. A short, fixed after-school routine solves both problems.
This template puts decompression first: a snack and a few minutes to unwind. Then homework, while there is still daylight and energy. And finally free play — which works much better as a reward that always comes than as a battleground.
The visual timer is especially useful for homework: many children (with or without ADHD) can focus for 20 minutes when they can see the end. "Work until the circle is empty" is concrete; "do your homework" is not.

Tips for parents
- Do not skip the snack step — a hungry child cannot do homework.
- Keep homework time bounded. If it is never enough, talk to the teacher rather than extending it daily.
- Free play comes after homework every single day — consistency is what ends the negotiation.
- On days without homework, replace that step with reading or a creative activity.
